Welcome New and Returning Metal Smiths!
I'm excited for the 2009-2010 school year! Last school year was an exceptional year with the many talented students we had in the program! The Metals Program had many students have pieces into art shows throughout the year. A large handful of those students won big awards regionally and state wide! I am looking forward to see who will be the shining artists coming out of the metals room this year!
This school year I am focusing on getting our studio more organized. It seemed like every time I turned around last year the room was a mess and supplies were being wasted. I have a few supplies that are required of you to get for the class this year. Those supplies are: safety glasses, rubber cement, an ultra thin sharpie, a pencil box, a lock (if you are sharing with someone only one of you needs to get a lock), a bottle of white out (not the pen), and a spiral bound sketchbook (around a 9" x 12"). Having your own supplies will be much more convenient for you and the organization of the studio.
If, throughout the year, you would like to purchase any materials on your own (i.e. fine silver) you can get that through http://www.riogrande.com/
Thanks, and I'm looking forward to see what you all create!

Thunderhawk Construction
Today, four of us spent the day constructing a six foot thunderhawk out of 1/8" steel. This thunderhawk will be attached to the bell tower of Lakota East once it is totally completed. Keep in mind that the entire thunderhawk was cut out with nothing more than a grinder! Here are a few photos of the progression throughout the day.

2009 Governor's State Show
This year around 12,000 students entered work into the 2009 Governor's State Show throughout Ohio, and only 300 were accepted into the State Show! Lakota East Metals Department is proud that three students had pieces accepted into the show! Congratulations to Shannon Carrier, Allison May and Amanda Wandersee!
Here is the website to the Ohio Governor's Show:
Also, here are pictures of Shannon and Amanda's pieces (Unfortunately, we do not have a picture of Allison's piece. We will post a picture when it comes back!).
